Barolo is a big bold dry red wine produced in the Piedmont region of Italy. The wine is made from a Nebbiolo grape, a small thin skinned red grape varietal high in acid and tannins. Barolo wines must be solely composed of Nebbiolo, and without exceptions. According to DOCG regulations Barolo must be aged for at least two years in oak and one year in the bottle.

Tasting Notes: violets, black cherry, cinnamon, leather, smoke, tobacco, and white pepper. Barolo is known as the “King†of Italian wines. This is a true pairing for fatty and red meats. Spaghetti with meat balls, steak with mushrooms, and grilled burgers. Young Barolo works with bold sauces, while older Barolo is best with delicate sauces. I enjoy a glass of Barolo with Gorganzala cheese on top of a turkey burger.

The Ratti wine making philosophy is founded on solid principles that have been in force more than 50 years. When Pietro Ratti began running the family winery from his father Renato, he was following in the footsteps of a Barolo visionary.

Ratti Barolo is exceptional with highlighted aromas of Bing cherry, stewed strawberry, ripe raspberry, cured meat, red rose petals, and savory spices. The tastes of a nice acidity, dried herbs, floral petal, raspberry, cassis, red plum, cherry, oak, vanilla, spice and cigar smoke. A sophisticated long finish of red berries and black licorice. Ready to drink now or aging is a wonderful idea for any Barolo.

Bruno and Marcello Ceretto started their first winery in 1973. The idea was to create a place where the grapes come from. The nose is earthy with pomegranate and dried flowers. While the tannins are present, they are well-integrated and balanced with a nice acidity in this Barolo. Spicy and rich flavors of raspberries, dried cranberry, cassis, cloves, violets, rose petals, smoke, vanilla, cedar, and black licorice. A long polished finished of pomegranate and earth’s floor. The big red wine to pair with summer grilled spareribs. I enjoyed this Barolo with a Philly cheese steak sandwich and a side of parmesan fries.

Both wines are legendary delicious and crafted with great care. They make impressive thoughtful gifts to a wine lover.

  1. This article is beyond CLASSY.
I had a glass of Barolo on a cruise 2022. Smells like violet flowers just like Ms Wanda’s description. She is totally the rich Auntie of the Cincinnati Herald.
